Soft Contact Lenses
Soft contact lenses have changed through the years. Contacts used to come just one way – as hard little discs that had to be put in and removed every day, carefully cleaned and cared for, and that could crunch underfoot after popping out of the eye and inconvenient moments. Many people found them too uncomfortable to wear, and others hated the daily maintenance involved. But times have changed, and the new soft contact lenses are both comnfortable to wear and easy to use.
Almost anyone can wear soft contact lenses, in fact, even those who were unable to wear the traditional hard lenses. Not so long ago, people suffering from astigmatism (near-sightedness) were unable to wear contacts because their vision problems are the result of a misshapen cornea. But companies like DuraSoft and AcuVue now make “toric” lenses that are designed specifically to be worn by people with astigmatism. These soft toric contact lenses are available as colored lenses, as well, under the FreshLook Optifit label.
Disposable Soft Contacts
One of the biggest breakthroughs in soft contact lenses was the introduction of disposable contacts in 1987. Designed to be worn for a period of time – usually from two weeks to a month – and then thrown away and replaced with a fresh pair, these have become the most popular style of lenses on the market.
Doctors have found that the more frequently you replace your contact lenses, the better your eye health, as lenses develop a build-up of deposits that can lead to eye infections or scratched corneas. These lenses offer the ultimate in convenience, from daily-wear contacts that you replace every day with a new pair (these are the most recommended by eye doctors) that require no cleaning or storage, to extended-wear lenses that you wear all of the time, even to sleep, for up to a month between replacements.
Users love the new soft contacts, with are thinner and more comfortable to wear and can be purchased as coloured lenses, as well. Users can change the color of their eyes – even dark eyes – while enjoying the benefits of disposable lenses. Users can wear non-precription sunglasses, sleep in their contacts, go camping without having to worry about lens care, and be assured of top-notch eye health.
They’re even available to people who need bifocals because they have presbyopia, the age-related loss of near vision that leads to older people needing reading glasses. Bifocal contact lenses work much the same way as bifocal eyeglasses, with the lens having a different prescription on the bottom and the top of the lens. There are several different types of bifocal contacts, so discuss this option with your eye doctor.
