Lasik Eye Surgery Is Available No Matter Where You Are
In recent years, improvements in technology have made Lasik eye surgery better and more affordable than ever, making it a popular choice for people who want freedom from eyeglasses and contacts. Once a procedure that was primarily chosen by wealthy clients in big cities like Miami and Beverly Hills, it’s become widely available to anyone who wants it. While no laser surgery can restore 20/20 vision entirely, most patients report that the improvement in their sight following Lasik has been nothing short of remarkable.
Two Types Of Vision Correction Surgery
There are actually two kinds of laser eye surgery procedures, Lasik eye surgery (an acronym for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratomy). Both procedures involve the reshaping of the cornea, the clear front “lens” of the eye that’s used for focus. Astigmatism – known by most people as “near-sightedness” – is caused by the cornea becoming misshapen, and is corrected by the surgeon using the laser to flatten the cornea. The opposite is done to correct far-sightedness, with the surgeon making the curve of the cornea more pronounced. The type of laser used is called an “excimer,” and it uses ultraviolet light to remove fine layers of material from the cornial lens without actually burning or cutting the cornea.
PRK is an older technique that uses the same type of laser to re-sculpt the cornea after part of the cornea’s outer layer is scraped away. Lasik is usually the procedure of choice as it heals faster than PRK, and it’s painless. In some cases, however, a surgeon will feel that PRK is a better choice, especially if the patient has very thin corneas. And, as with any surgery, there are risks – Lasik, because of the way the UV laser penetrates the cornea, has been occasionally linked with a condition called keratectasia, which is caused by the corneal lens being thinned too much. This is a rare occurrence, however.
Most patients are extremely happy with the results of Lasik eye surgery, although a good surgeon will make sure that you understand the limitations of the surgery. Some people find that their surgically corrected vision isn’t as sharp as their vision was when wearing glasses, and there’s a very small chance that you’ll still have to wear glasses of a much lighter prescription than before for driving and other activities where you need excellent distance vision. There’s also a very small incidence of patients who need a followup Lasik procedure a few weeks after the original surgery, to sharpen their vision even further.
The popularity of Lasik and PRK surgeries has grown so much in the past decade that it’s becoming as common for a construction worker in Boulder to seek laser eye surgery as a millionaire in Fort Lauderdale, and every major metropolitan area has highly qualified, board-certified eye surgeons trained in laser surgery. If you’re ready to toss aside your glasses or contacts, perhaps it’s time to look into Lasik eye surgery.
