B&L Optifit Toric Lenses Great for Sports and Activities
Lenses designed for people with astigmatism like B&L Optifit toric lenses are a breakthrough for people with astigmatism. Bausch and Lomb’s lenses, like those of other companies made for astigmatism, are specially shaped to conform to the irregular shape of the astigmatics’ cornea. For many years these people were unable to wear contacts, as the spherical style didn’t fit their eyes. But the new toric lenses, available in either soft or rigid5 formulations, allow those with astigmatism to wear contacts – even colored contacts, which is of special benefit to people who play certain sports.
Not all sports lend themselves to B&L Optifit Toric lenses, of course – swimming, for example. But for many outdoor activities, the inconvenience of glasses – which slip down the nose, fog up, get wet in the rain and provide limited peripheral vision – make them more of a drawback to wearers than a help. Glasses can also fall off and break, and even in the best of circumstances they can distort the wearer’s depth perception.
But contact lenses like B&L Optifit toric lenses in Colorblends and the Durasoft 3 Optifit toric colour contact lens give the wearer increased comfort, depth perception and peripheral vision, as well as improving visual contrast when playing outdoor sports. Besides changing the color of the eyes, these colored lenses can also be made with an ultraviolet (UV) filter that protect the cornea and the retina from UV light.
For sports like racquetball and tennis, eye protection is still recommended. But non-prescription goggles are far less expensive that custom prescription eye protection, and with a good pair of toric contacts, any type of goggles you like can fit the bill. The only real concern with contact lens, be they Durasoft, B&L or some other make, is that you should be careful when playing sports in a dusty environment. This is especially true with soft lenses, as they cover a larger area of the eye – even a small particle under the lens can irritate and even scratch the cornea.
For most outdoor activities, including golf, hiking and tennis, toric coloured lenses offer increased ease of vision and convenience to people with astigmatism. You should talk to your opthamologist or other eye care professional about the right contact lens product for you.
